I castelli matildici

MATILDE OF CANOSSA AND HER CASTLES

The most classic tour to follow the trail of Countess Matilde, one of the most amazing women of the Middle Ages. During the tour we will discover her fortresses on the hills: Canossa, the place of the famous meeting between Pope and Emperor in 1077; Rossena, the sentinel built on a steep cliff of volcanic rock; Rossenella, a watchtower with a breath-taking sight on the valley, and Bianello, where in 1111 the Emperor Henry V crowned Matilde with the title of “Imperial Vicar Vice-Queen of Italy”.

Val d'Enza e Terre Matildiche

From here we will head towards Votigno, an ancient village now hosting the Casa del Tibet (House of Tibet), an international cultural centre, and then to Sarzano to visit the recently restored castle. The ideal conclusion of this tour is gastronomic, with a typical lunch in one of the many good restaurants of the area; on request I'll be glad to continue the tour in the afternoon to visit the parish church of Pianzo, a wonderful example of 11th century architecture, the oratory of Beleo and the Abbey of Marola.
